What to Watch July 31st
Friday, 30 July 2010 00:00

Last week we missed our What to Watch Special, thanks in large part to our editor preparing for the game of the week last week.  What you missed was the first round of the playoffs in the NEFL, and a pair of stellar matchups in the IFL.  We're back at it this week, and here is...

WHAT TO WATCH!

St Paul Pioneers (7-2) @ Chippewa Valley Predators (7-0), SEMIFINAL, NEFL.
The Preds had a BYE last week after securing the #1 seed in the NEFL with a second consecutive undefeated season.  This week, the Pioneers- yes, they of the DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION status, come back to town for the semifinals showdown.  Meeting back in week 4, the Predators welcomed the P-Unit to Elite Football with a 30 - 27 victory.  St Paul rebounded well, and following a victory last week over the South Metro Dragons in the Twin Cities, they march back into Wisconsin hungry to knock off CV, who have won 20 straight.  Chippewa Valley, of course, is looking to defend their NEFL title and keep pace in the race of undefeated in the state.

Saturday, 6PM, Carson Park, Eau Claire, WI.

Twin Ports Stampede (8-1) @ Fox Valley Force (8-1), SEMIFINAL, NEFL
The other NEFL Semifinal will be played in Appleton on Saturday, when the Twin Ports Stampede travel to take on the second seeded Fox Valley Force.  The Force rested last weekend, having secured a BYE with their high seeding, while the Stampede took care of business, downing the visiting Green Bay Gladiators 28-3.  Fox Valley lost last season's Elite Bowl 2 to Chippewa Valley, after having won two straight WSFL Championships.  The Stampede were winners in Elite Bowl 1, and after a down year last season, they changed the front office and have risen back to power.  Either way this turns out, and Elite Bowl veteran team will be back in the Championship

Saturday, 4PM, Banta Bowl at Lawrence University, Appleton, WI

West Bend Junkyard Dogs (6-2) @ Burlington Blue Devils (7-1), IFL
Fresh off their spanking last week in Madison, the Dogs will look to rebound in this cross conference match-up.  A win would almost guarantee the Dogs the #2 seed in the NFC.  Burlington has the AFC #1 seed wrapped up, but they are looking to continue riding their hot streak into the playoffs.  A win over the Dogs would prove that Burlington can not only hang with the big dogs, but they can dispatch them with ease.  Look for the boys in blue to make a statement in this one and try to send a warning shot across the rest of the league.  West Bend needs to bounce back emphatically after their first here-is-your-lunch loss, and a win in Burlington would send shockwaves across much of the rest of the league.  This one will be one of the best of the season in the IFL.

Saturday, 7PM, Karcher Field, Burlington, WI

55 Years Young and Slinging TD's
Sunday, 11 July 2010 07:13

From Madison.com Local Sports Section-

"Bob Gingras got his wish to play quarterback.

Denied the chance to play football growing up in North Dakota because he has only one kidney, the 55-year-old Madison attorney strapped on a helmet and got under center Saturday night.

The owner of the Madison Mustangs, Gingras fulfilled a lifelong dream to play tackle football, appearing in three series, including the final series prior to halftime. He made the most of his appearance, completing three of his seven passes for 43 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown to Reggie Davis to give his team a 34-0 halftime lead.

The Mustangs calmed the Milwaukee Storm 55-0 in an Ironman Football League semi-pro game at Breitenbach Stadium in Middleton.

The Mustangs (6-0) won their 30th straight game in beating the Storm (0-6).

Davis also scored on a 6-yard pass from David Pietrowiak, who ran 1 yard for a first-quarter score and later hooked up on a 28-yard scoring pass to Kyle Brodd. Brodd also scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter following a 6-yard TD run by Jonathan Wiggins.

George Randolph scored on a 1-yard run and Allan Okpala added an 18-yard TD interception return."
