WISemiPro.com, or WSP, was founded in November 2007 by longtime football fan Matt Markson. Matt's goal was simple: he was tired of searching message board after message board and website after website to find the information about amateur, or semi-pro, football in his state. With teams coming and going and leagues forming and folding, Matt felt fans could benefit from a clearinghouse type site to bring all the info together. The first iteration of the site was very crude and conjured comparisons to the DrudgeReport.com with simple links and very few pages.
Matt also found that people were willing to send in stories and help where they could. One of the first contributors was a semi-pro player himself, Derek Distin. Derek saw the need for a site to bring the stories to people that they had been missing out on, benefiting fans of each of the leagues with information about the other leagues and opening outside eyes to the subculture that is amateur football. Distin also helped run several small websites, and his html skills paved the way for the second iteration of the site 5 months later, complete with a larger site structure, a more in depth front page and advertising space.
For almost a year, Distin and Markson worked in their spare time on the site. Interviews were conducted, news was broken, and the site gained a small cult following and broke even thanks to ad revenue. Markson, however, received a job offer that would take him out of state. Around the same time, the two had discussed the direction of where they saw WSP going. Distin saw a big picture that could be replicated in various states, Markson was only interested in his friends' teams.
So the two reached an agreement to sell WSP, its domain, and the rights to Distin, who brought in several small business partners and an independent developer to work on the future of WSP. Immediately the site was given an aesthetic facelift, but little was done on the backend. With the economy struggling throughout the summer of 2009, the site was allowed to coast while the group perfected their business plan.
Finally, the plan was completed, pitched to an investor, and funding was secured. In November of 2009, WISemiPro.com received a complete overhaul and structure redesign. The site was relaunched with a new mission, a new team of helpers, and a new goal in mind. What you see is the result of that goal; we hope it will continue to serve as your source for all news related to semi-professional football.
